What Is A Male Hormone Test?

Our male hormone blood test offers a comprehensive check of all the key male hormones. This men's hormone test measures the levels of LH (luteinising hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) as well as three different testosterone measures; total testosterone, free testosterone (calculated) and FAI (free androgen index).

Testosterone is usually the most common hormone measured in men. However, it is also important to measure the hormones that control testosterone production. The main control hormone is luteinising hormone (LH) which is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. The pituitary gland also produces the hormone prolactin which can reduce the production of LH and hence testosterone if it becomes too high. Measuring testosterone in isolation therefore does have some limitations. Whilst measuring control hormones such as luteinising hormones and other transports proteins will provide a fuller picture.

Your test is analysed by our UKAS accredited lab and reviewed by a GP. Results will be made available within 2 working days of receipt through our market leading dashboard which enables you to track trends over time and provides information and tips on how to improve your results.

If you participate in sport you may also be interested in our sister service Forth Edge which has profiles specifically tailored to power lifting and endurance training.

Why Measure Male Hormone Levels?

Understanding your male hormone profile can help you to get on top of a range of symptoms including low libido, fatigue, poor sports performance and even potentially weight gain.

As you age, your testosterone levels in particular will drop. In fact, by your forties, your testosterone levels could be half what they were at twenty. Overtraining in sport can also result in low testosterone. Low testesterone in sport can impact on your bone health and increase your risk of injury.

Regardless of your age, you can benefit from testing and tracking your male hormones. This will identify areas that need to be addressed either through lifestyle or medical intervention.

What biomarkers are included in a Male hormone test?

The key biomarkers used in the male hormone test help establish potential causes of particular symptoms such as mood changes, low libido, fertility problems and energy levels.

  • Albumin - is responsible for transporting key molecules such as testosterone throughout the blood. The amount of albumin in the blood is directly associated with liver function, nutritional and bone health.
  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) - Increased FSH levels are associated with a reduction in sperm production, usually occurring with low inhibin levels.
  • Cortisol - high levels of cortisol can affect mood, cause weight gain, difficulty concentrating, reduced libido and high blood pressure. Low cortisol levels can cause weakness, tiredness and reduce blood pressure, all of which can make you feel low on energy.
  • FAI - Free androgen index (FAI) is an estimate of the amount of free testosterone in the bloodstream. Low testosterone levels in men can cause low mood, reduced performance, and low libido.
  • LH - Luteinising hormone (LH) plays a key role in the human reproductive system. It is also the key control hormone for testosterone.
  • Oestradiol (Oestrogen) - increased levels of oestradiol in men and decreased levels of testosterone can increase the risk of erectile dysfunction.
  • Prolactin - is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. Consistently high levels in men can cause suppression of other pituitary hormones such as FSH and LH.
  • Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) - Reduced levels of SHBG means there is a greater amount of free testosterone in circulation.
  • Testosterone - affects the brain, bone and muscle mass, fat distribution, the vascular system, energy levels, sexual functioning, and fertility.
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) - regulates the production of hormones by the thyroid gland. Thyroid imbalance can lead to problems with weight, energy, and mood.
  • Thyroxine (T4) - has a role to play in a wide range of the body's functions including the maintenance of healthy bones, muscle control as well as brain development, heart, and digestive functions.

What our customers say

Efficient, great communication and information. Very fast, next day turnaround. Very, very pleased. Highly recommended and best value I have found.

First time using a service like this looked at reviews previously before purchasing, happy to see the five stars reviews are reflective of the service. The kit arrived the next day after ordering I waited till the Monday to do the sample sent it off Monday AM and had the results back Tuesday PM. Wow what a quick service! Follow the tips about doing the blood sample and you shouldn’t have any issues, I found I only needed one lancet and the blood flowed freely after a hot shower and running my hands under warm water. I will definitely be using this service again as I got some surprising results which I’d like to see improve.

This should be the most common thing people do.
Great company, easy to read results. Well worth it. The cost is an investment

An excellent service, I got fast replies to my enquires and immediate practical solutions. I needed my results quickly after being unable to get samples on my first attempt and Forth found a resolution for me and assisted at each stage. Really great communication from individuals who have the knowledge and ability to sort things out. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

I'd put off getting regular blood tests before because of the long-winded process of a GP visit. Forth has changed all that. The process is very quick and very easy, with thorough, well-explained results delivered to your inbox within days.

As a former Olympic cyclist I always wanted to look after my health. This has never changed to this day but become a lot easier via Forth, it’s the only way to really understand your own body.

Wasn’t feeling quite right and believed I may be chronically stressed. Took the baseline plus option which is a wider range of tests and this confirmed by expectations and also highlighted two further issues which I’ve raised with my GP. Well worth the piece of mind.

I suffer from a hereditary condition which causes my body to store too much iron.  My biggest issue before using Forth was getting an appointment with my GP.  Now using Forth I can track my iron quickly and easily and take action before levels start to affect my health

Mark Threfall, 29

This was a really simple and quick process. I ordered the test kit, it arrived 2 days later. I did my blood test a few days later and put it straight in the post. My results were with me 3 days later. Brilliant. The dashboard is very well presented and gave me a clear view of each marker. I’m not happy with all the results, but that’s not Forth with Life’s fault. That’s down to my own body!

Mrs Heidi Tyler
