Why Test Omega 6 and Omega 3 LEVELS?

Omega 6 and omega 3 affect the level of inflammation in your body. Omega 3 lowers inflammation whilst omega 6 increases inflammation. So, measuring your omega 6 to omega 3 ratios will tell you if you’ve got the balance right, or if there are some changes you need to make to your diet to improve your levels.

An increase in inflammation in the body can increase the likelihood of developing a chronic illness like heart disease, stroke, or inflammatory disease.

Our Omega 6 and 3 blood test will measure the ratio of these fatty acids in your body. Your results will be available to view on your personal dashboard and you’ll get advice on improving your results.

Learn more about omega 6 and 3 ratios.

What is a healthy omega 6 and 3 ratio?

In the UK, an ideal omega 6 and 3 ratio should be around 3:1.

However, figures show that the Western diet typically has an omega ratio 10 times higher than it should be.  This means that we are at a greater risk of inflammation and heart disease.

According to our data, the average Forth customer has an omega 6:3 ratio of 13:1.

The best way to improve this ratio is to reduce the amount of processed vegetable oils present in your diet and increase food sources that are high in omega 3s.

Frequently asked questions

Take the guess work out of your health. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get asked. If you need anything else try our help section.

  • What are omega 3 and 6 fatty acids?

Omega 6 and 3 are essential fatty acids that make up an important part of cell membranes.

The body can make all of the fatty acids it needs except these two which means we must eat them in our diets. Despite their, often, bad press, fats are essential for various functions in the human body including regulating blood pressure and supporting the immune system.

  • What is heart disease?

Heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease, generally refers to conditions where the blood vessels become narrowed or blocked and can lead to chest pain, heart attacks or stroke.

Over time, the artery walls can become clogged up with fatty deposits which restricts blood flow and a major cause is a poor lifestyle.

  • What are the symptoms of heart disease?

You may not know you have heart disease until an event such as a heart attack or stroke happens. Therefore, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take control of your health, our omega 3 tests are just one way you can do that.

  • How can I improve my result?

Making changes to your diet will help to improve your omega 6 and 3 ratio. For example, consuming more foods containing omega 3 and less omega 6 can help. Foods high in omega 3 include fatty fish (mackerel, salmon, sardines) but if you can’t eat fish or don’t like it there are plenty of supplements available to help boost your intake.

It’s important to take part in regular physical activity as this can also help to reduce the risk of chronic disease.

  • What is inflammation?

There are two types of inflammation in the body.

    1. Acute inflammation
Acute inflammation is the bodies response to an injury like blunt force trauma or a cut. Your immune system will send white blood cells to protect the area, usually causing signs like swelling and redness. There is a similar response by the body to infection where inflammation is necessary to help fight it.

    2. Chronic inflammation
Chronic inflammation occurs in response to harmful substances in the body, such as a build up of fatty plaques in the arteries.

When fatty plaques build up in the arteries inflammation occurs because the body recognises the plaques as foreign bodies. In doing so, it shields the plaque from the blood flowing through the artery but there is a risk of the plaque breaking up if the wall is broken. So blood clots can form which may restrict blood flow to vital organs like the heart and brain.  This can cause a heart attack or stroke.  Therefore, high levels of inflammation in your body heightens your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
