Why check
Thyroid Hormone levels?

The thyroid is responsible for making hormones that control the speed of your metabolism. There are two thyroid hormones secreted into the bloodstream, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These regulate the speed at which your body cells work. An imbalance can result in your cells working either too fast or too slow, resulting in changes to your energy levels, weight, and mood.

So, by measuring the amount of T4 and T3 in the blood, you can see if your thyroid is functioning normally. You may be experiencing some symptoms already but often they are similar to other conditions. Our home thyroid blood test kit can quickly and accurately identify any potential thyroid issues.

When to take This test

You can provide the sample for the thyroid check at any time but we don’t recommend checking your thyroid levels during illness as this may give an accurate result.

Thyroid Issues In The UK

We carried out a study to find out how many people in the UK had a thyroid disorder.

It’s estimated that 1 in 20 people in the UK have a thyroid condition, but the real figure could be much larger because many people are unaware, they have an issue.  In addition, some thyroid disorders could be on the rise.

1 in 50 women in the UK live with an overactive thyroid and are 6 times more likely to have an overactive thyroid than men.

Frequently asked questions

Take the guess work out of your health. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get asked. If you need anything else try our help section.

  • What is the Thyroid?

The thyroid is a small gland responsible for controlling the speed at which the cells in the body work. The two hormones it produces, thyroxine and triiodothyronine are responsible for influencing your metabolism. T4 is a less active form compared to T3. Once inside cells T4 is converted to T3 and influences the activity of the cells. However, if too much thyroid hormone is secreted then your cells work unnecessarily faster and this can cause an overactive thyroid, also known as hyperthyroidism. On the other hand, if there aren’t enough thyroid hormones being secreted, then your cells may work slowly, a condition called hypothyroidism or an underactive thyroid.

  • Can I improve my result?

Yes, implementing lifestyle changes can help to manage your condition. In many cases, a thyroid issue is caused by an autoimmune condition but you may be able to manage symptoms with diet and exercise.

For example, if you have hypothyroidism following a diet that emphasises lean meat, plenty of fruit and vegetables and omega 3 fatty acids can help manage the weight gain associated with the disorder. Plus, be sure to eat plenty of fibre as this can help to manage digestive problems like constipation.

People with an overactive thyroid often crave carbohydrate-rich foods because they are burning lots of energy but it’s important to choose wholegrain options which are high in fibre and starchy, so they’ll release energy slowly.

Exercise is also important for both conditions as it can help alleviate symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and weight gain. It can also help you to get a better night’s sleep. Cutting out smoking can be beneficial because it has been identified as a risk factor for worsening eye problems associated with the autoimmune condition, which causes hyperthyroidism called Graves’ Disease.

  • What is a thyroid function test?

The thyroid check measures the amount of free thyroxine (FT4) and free triiodothyronine (FT3) in the blood. That is the hormones which are not bound to proteins which transport them around the body. By measuring the amount of free, unbound thyroid hormones circulating in the blood, it will be easier to distinguish if the symptoms you might be experiencing are caused by your thyroid.

The test also measures the amount of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain and works by stimulating the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones. So, levels of TSH may be able to help identify potential issues but is more accurate alongside FT4 and FT3 measurements.

  • What is the cost of the thyroid test?

Our thyroid check costs £49 and it is suitable for anyone who wants to check their thyroid function. You can also use this test to track your thyroid function over time to monitor the progress of an existing thyroid condition.

  • When should you get your thyroid checked?

If you’re concerned about your thyroid function and are experiencing some of the symptoms, our thyroid check can give you an accurate measurement of your hormone levels and help to identify potential issues.

If you have already been diagnosed with a thyroid condition, our thyroid function test can also help you to track and monitor your condition over time. You may also find this beneficial if you have implemented changes to your lifestyle to help control the condition.

  • What is thyroxine?

Thyroxine is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland; it’s also known as T4. Once it is released from the thyroid, it travels in the bloodstream to the various organs of the body and is converted to a more active form, triiodothyronine (T3).

Thyroxine is important for the function of the heart and digestive system, metabolism, bone health and brain development.
