Dr thom phillips

Thom has worked in elite sport for over 10 years. Initially as a sports scientist, then a coach and now as a medical doctor to a number of elite teams and individuals. His main sports role is currently the club doctor at Bristol Bears Rugby and Bristol City FC. He works closely with the 1st teams and Academy medical teams alongside the heads of performance to support the players on and off the pitch. With a role that spans across all teams under the Bristol Sport banner he is used to dealing with a plethora of Sports Medicine issues. He works collaboratively with a fantastic team of physiotherapists, sports therapists, S&C coaches and sports scientists to deliver world class support to the athletes.

His role includes blood and urine screening, annual neuro-cognitive and cardiac testing, weekly medical clinics, reviewing biometric data in relation to performance and health, medicine management, research and innovation as well as liaising closely with specialists regarding investigations and interventions.

Away from the clubs he is one of the managing partners at an NHS GP practice in Cwmbran. During his tenure the practice has grown from a single site 7000 patient practice to a dual site practice serving a little over 16000 patients. He is the metabolic health lead which means he is responsible for designing the diabetes service at the practice and oversees the ongoing care of patients with diabetes and other metabolic health diseases.

Over the last 6 years he has been working with Forth, where he has brought his expertise regarding the use of biomarkers in performance to the company and its customers.

Previously, Thom has published research into inflammatory markers and performance in both sprint and endurance sport. He has also written text book chapters regarding sleep and the impact of medication on performance.
