Check your ferritin levels at home

Checking your ferritin levels at home is quick and easy with our finger-prick blood test. Ferritin is a key marker of your body’s iron stores, helping to diagnose iron deficiency or overload. Low ferritin levels can lead to fatigue, hair thinning, and dizziness, while high levels may indicate inflammation or underlying health conditions.

With our home test, you simply collect a small blood sample using a finger-prick kit, then send it to our accredited lab for analysis. Your results are available in a secure online dashboard, complete with expert insights to help you understand your iron status. If your levels are low, you can take steps to improve your iron intake through diet and supplements.

What our doctors say:

"Elevated ferritin levels can be indicative of inflammation and have been linked to high blood pressure and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). In contrast, low levels can indicate iron deficiency, which can lead to anaemia as well as reducing sleep quality, immune function and even thyroid function."

Frequently asked questions

This is what our customers ask us about the most. For more information, try our help centre.

What is ferritin?

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in your body, releasing it when needed. It helps regulate iron levels, ensuring your body has enough for essential functions like oxygen transport and energy production.

What is a ferritin blood test?

A ferritin blood test measures the amount of ferritin in your blood, indicating your iron storage levels. It’s used to diagnose iron deficiency, iron overload, and related health conditions.

What should ferritin levels be?

Data from thousands of Forth customers revealed the median ferritin level for women is 60 ug/L and 137 ug/L for men.

The data also shows that ferritin levels rise in women as they age, but drop in men.

Ferritin Levels in Men and Women in the UK – Feb 2025
Median Ferritin Levels (ug/L)
Age Bracket Female Male
18-29 51.5 109
30-39 53 138
40-49 55 146
50-59 72 147
60+ 99 174

Low ferritin levels may indicate iron deficiency, leading to fatigue and weakness. High ferritin levels can be linked to inflammation, liver disease, or iron overload disorders like haemochromatosis.

What other biomarkers should I check with ferritin?

It’s useful to check iron, transferrin saturation, B12 and folate alongside ferritin to get a full picture of your iron status. You can personalise this test to create a blood test tailored to your specific needs.

What causes low ferritin?

Low ferritin levels are usually caused by inadequate iron intake, heavy periods, pregnancy, poor absorption (e.g. coeliac disease), or blood loss from conditions like ulcers or gastrointestinal disorders.

What are the signs of low ferritin?

Symptoms of low ferritin include extreme fatigue, pale skin, dizziness, hair thinning, shortness of breath, and brittle nails. If left untreated, it can lead to iron deficiency anaemia.

How can I increase my ferritin levels?

To boost ferritin levels, increase your intake of iron-rich foods like red meat, spinach, and lentils. Pair iron with vitamin C for better absorption, and avoid excessive tea or coffee, which can block iron uptake. If needed, iron supplements may help, but consult a healthcare professional before use.

Is your packaging discreet?

Yes, the ferritin blood test is delivered in plain, unbranded packaging to protect your privacy.

How soon will the test arrive?

If you order before midday (Mon-Fri), your ferritin test kit will be dispatched the same day and should arrive within 1-2 working days.

How secure is my data?

We use industry-leading encryption to protect your personal information. Your results are private and only accessible through your secure account.

Can I have someone take my blood for me?

Yes, a healthcare professional or trusted person can assist you in collecting a blood sample. You can choose your collection method after adding the test to your basket.
