Oestrogen and progesterone levels in women by age, UK 2025

Monitoring Your Health During Menopause

Menopause brings major hormonal shifts that can have a lasting impact on your body. While some changes are easy to notice, like hot flushes and mood swings, others, such as declining bone density or increased heart disease risk, can develop silently over time.

Our data shows a sharp decline in oestrogen from 267 pmol/L in women aged 40-49, to just 50 pmol/L in women over 60. These drops can increase your risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and skin aging. Testing hormone levels in menopause provides clarity, helping you to make informed choices, whether you’re considering HRT, adjusting nutrition, or optimising lifestyle habits for long-term health.

Our menopause health test is quick, easy and accurate, giving you complete control over your hormone health.

MyFORM-Perimenopause-Problem

Menopause or perimenopause: which test do I need?

If you have not had a period for 12 months or more, the Menopause Blood Test is the right starting point. It provides a clear snapshot of the hormones associated with menopause, from a single sample, so you can understand your levels and track your health afterwards through the Forth app.

If you are still having periods but they are changing, or you are experiencing symptoms like irregular cycles, hot flushes or mood changes and want to understand whether perimenopause could be the cause, the MyFORM® Perimenopause Test is designed for you. Rather than a single snapshot, it maps how your hormones behave across two points in your cycle, which is better suited to the natural fluctuations of perimenopause.

In short: choose the Menopause Blood Test once your periods have stopped, and the Perimenopause Test while you are still cycling and seeking answers.

The pattern of your female hormones is indicative of reduced ovarian responsiveness. The pituitary increases the production of control hormones, particularly FSH, in order to stimulate the ovaries to release oestradiol. Ovarian responsiveness declines naturally as part of normal physiology from the age of 40, eventually culminating in menopause

What our doctors say:

"A Menopause Test is a valuable tool for women approaching this life stage. It assesses the key health markers, helping identify the wider health aspects associated with the metabolic changes that occur during menopause. Using these results can help optimise health."

Frequently asked questions

This is what our customers ask us about the most. For more information, try our help centre.

What is the best menopause blood test I can do at home?

The best home menopause blood test is one analysed in a UKAS-accredited, CQC-registered laboratory and reviewed by a doctor. Forth’s Menopause Blood Test (£129) measures 20 biomarkers, including FSH, LH and oestradiol, from a finger-prick sample, with results available through the Forth app in around two working days.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Common menopause symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, disturbed sleep, mood changes, anxiety, brain fog, low libido, vaginal dryness and joint aches. These can begin during perimenopause and last for years. Due to the fact that symptoms vary and overlap with other conditions, it is worth discussing them with your GP.

Which blood test confirms menopause?

No single blood test confirms menopause on its own. Menopause is defined clinically as 12 months without a period. Hormone tests, particularly follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), can support the picture and are most useful for women under 45. Always review your results with your GP for a full assessment.

Is there a home blood test for menopause?

Yes. Forth’s Menopause Blood Test can be completed by collecting a finger-prick sample at home, or by upgrading to a venous draw. The sample is then posted to a UKAS-accredited NHS laboratory. You receive doctor-reviewed results across 20 biomarkers within the Forth app in around two working days.

Are home menopause tests accurate?

Laboratory home blood tests, analysed in UKAS-accredited labs, are far more reliable than urine FSH strips. They still cannot diagnose menopause alone, because hormones fluctuate. Forth analyses samples in CQC-registered laboratories with doctor-reviewed results, providing a dependable reading you can discuss with your GP.

What is menopause?

Menopause is the natural stage in a woman’s life when periods stop completely due to a decline in reproductive hormones, particularly oestrogen and progesterone. It’s officially diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a period. Check if you might be perimenopausal with our free perimenopause symptom quiz.

When does menopause start?

Most women reach menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age in the UK being 51. However, some may experience it earlier due to genetics, medical conditions, or surgery.

How long does menopause last?

Menopause itself is a single point in time (12 months after your last period), but symptoms can begin years before in perimenopause and last for several years after. On average, symptoms persist for 4-8 years, but every woman’s experience is different.

What are the 7 early signs of menopause?

Early signs often include irregular or changing periods, hot flushes, night sweats, disturbed sleep, mood swings, brain fog and reduced libido. These usually start during perimenopause, before periods stop. If they are affecting your daily life, a hormone test and a conversation with your GP can help.

What are the worst menopause symptoms?

The most challenging symptoms vary for each woman but often include severe hot flushes, chronic fatigue, sleep disruption, anxiety, depression, joint pain, and memory issues.

What happens to my hormones during menopause?

Oestrogen and progesterone levels decline significantly, leading to symptoms like hot flushes, mood swings, and changes in bone and heart health. Testosterone levels may also decrease, affecting libido and energy levels.

What is the difference between perimenopause and menopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause when hormone levels fluctuate and symptoms begin. Menopause is confirmed when you haven’t had a period for 12 months. Postmenopause refers to the years after menopause, when symptoms may continue but hormone levels have stabilised.

If you think you may be going through perimenopause, our at-home perimenopause test can help you check and track hormones, giving you the answers you need.

Is there an accurate blood test for menopause?

Blood tests accurately measure your hormone levels, but they are one part of the picture rather than a standalone diagnosis. Hormones fluctuate, especially around perimenopause, so a result is most meaningful alongside your age, cycle history and symptoms. Forth’s results are doctor-reviewed to help you interpret them.

Can I take this test if I'm on HRT?

Yes. This test is suitable for women who are on HRT. It is also useful for understanding if you are on the right dose of HRT as it measures your levels of oestrogen. Repeating the test over time will enable you to see if your oestrogen levels are declining further, requiring a possible change in your HRT dose.

When do I need to take the test?

If you’re still having periods, collect your blood sample on the 3rd day of your period. If you no longer have periods, you can take the test at any time.

How do I find out my results are ready?

We keep you updated throughout the process by email and text message.

We will let you know when your blood sample has arrived at our lab. Once the blood sample has been analysed one of our doctors will review your results.

Once your results are ready, we will email you and send you a text message to let you know your results are ready for you to view in your health dashboard.
